About the Farm

Root to Rise Farm is owned by Tom and Lizzie Wemyss, who have taken on the ambitious project of restoring a historic 100-acre farm along the Connecticut River in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom. This remarkable property, dating back to circa 1773, carries 250 years of agricultural history within its boundaries. When the couple purchased the farm in August 2023, they found it abandoned, neglected, and in serious disrepair, presenting both a formidable challenge and an extraordinary opportunity to breathe new life into a piece of Vermont's farming heritage.

Since acquiring the property, Tom and Lizzie have dedicated themselves wholeheartedly to the restoration process, pouring their hearts and souls into reviving both the homestead and the land itself. They have worked tirelessly to restore the historic house, uncover and tend to overgrown gardens that had been reclaimed by nature, and systematically bring the entire farm back to productive life. This labor of love represents not just a business venture, but a deeply personal commitment to preserving agricultural heritage while building a sustainable future for their family.

The farm operates on principles of sustainability and regenerative agriculture, with the Wemyss family raising heritage Scottish Highland cattle for both breeding stock and beef on open pastures. They cultivate heirloom vegetables and rustic flowers for their farm stand, and Lizzie applies her expertise in artisan sourdough baking to create breads and baked goods. All of this agricultural work takes place while they raise their two young daughters, creating a multi-generational farming operation that honors both tradition and innovation in Vermont's storied Northeast Kingdom.
